Frank,

It sounds like you do not have a genuine copy of windows as the black desktop is a symptom of a non-geniune Windows install.

Recently I installed a Windows 7 upgrade - in keeping up with the latest and the greatest - on my computer. Even obtaining assistance from India through support.microsoft.com/ea (ea meaning Easy Assist), I downloaded my large quantity of files. It  took several hours in converting from Windows Vista to Windows 7, because the files are completely reconfigured. The Win 7 features on my three-year-old Gateway computer appear to be fine, except for one disturbing factor; i.e. the Desktop on my computer screen remains black underneath the icons. There is a Win 7 feature called Personalization that is supposed to provides the capability to display a Microsoft logo or picture on the desktop. I am unable to obtain this feature.

Contact with Gateway provided no solution, thinking they must possess is a driver. No luck.

   I would appreciate your suggestions.

Arthur,

Curious to hear more about your issues. Are you using an older machine? Does the manufacture not have drivers for your audio card? Are you running older software that was not compatable with Windows Vista and now Windows 7?

I am curious to learn more behind your comments.
